Handsome inside and out, and great to drive, the new BMW 5 Series comes well-equipped and is surprisingly affordable to run. Now in its seventh generation, this mid-size saloon should be top of your executive car shortlist.
The new BMW 5 Series is bigger than before, but doesn’t look it. It is also curvier and is adorned with a number of eye-catching features. These include a chrome kidney radiator grille (with chrome-faced and black-sided vertical louvers) which artfully blends into the car’s sleek headlights. Other striking features include 17-inch alloy wheels and twin chrome exhaust pipes. LED headlights are among the vehicle’s range of exterior lighting.
The BMW 5 Series' sumptuous five-person cabin is upholstered in leather. Everyone on board is provided with plenty of space to relax, and front-row travellers are treated to heated seats. Among other things, the driver benefits from gearshift paddles mounted on the vehicle’s steering wheel. Other standard features include automatic two-zone air conditioning, plenty of cubby spaces and ambient lighting. The vehicle’s 530-litre boot can be accessed with ease thanks to a low loading lip and wider aperture.
The latest BMW 5 Series has lost up to 100kg in weight, helping to make it quicker and more agile. A 2.0-litre 150bhp diesel engine is fitted as standard, delivering 360Nm of torque, 0-60mph in 9.7 seconds, up to 65.7mpg and a 114g/km CO2 emission figure. The most fuel-efficient option comes with plug-in electric hybrid models, returning as much as 141.2mpg and emissions as low as 46g/km.
Auto Start-Stop system, Brake Energy Regeneration and three Drive Performance Control modes are included as standard.
An iDrive Touch infotainment system comes complete with a high-resolution eight-inch display screen. Audio entertainment is provided by DAB radio and an MP3-compatible CD player. Bluetooth and USB connectivity and satellite navigation are featured as standard too.
The BMW 5 Series has been awarded Euro NCAP’s five-star crash-test rating. eCall, a feature of the car’s ConnectedDrive system, automatically informs the emergency services whenever an airbag is deployed. Other standard safety features include Electronic Stability Control, front and rear Park Distance Control, seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters and ISOFIX preparation.
