The new BMW X1 is bigger and better than before. With a higher and slightly wider body than the old model and a longer wheelbase, it’s not just more striking on the outside –it’s more spacious on the inside too.
The new arrival remains rugged and confident in terms of looks, with dynamic lines helping it to make a superb first impression. BMW’s characteristic large kidney-shaped grille features on the front between slim headlights which can include LED technology as an option. Front and rear skid plates plus roof rails are also seen on the outside as evidence of the car’s all-terrain inspiration.
The 505-litre boot is 85 litres bigger than before, and with the back seats folded, there are now 1,550 litres of load space – an impressive 200 litres more than in the old X1. You can also opt for a flat-folding front passenger seat to increase load space still further. Storage is excellent – there are nets and tie-down points throughout the cabin, under-seat compartments and a bin in each of the four doors which is big enough for a one-litre water bottle. Headroom, visibility, comfort and legroom are all better than ever - the back is spacious enough even for tall adults – and sliding rear seats are an option too.
The crossover also offers a wealth of advanced technology. As standard you can enjoy access to dual-zone air conditioning, satellite navigation, hands-free Bluetooth and a DAB radio and CD player which can connect to your MP3 player.
There are four TwinPower Turbo engine options: the 18d, 20d and 25d diesels, plus a petrol 20i. All benefit from variable turbine geometry, which improves power, torque, response and fuel economy. The option of eight-speed transmission - standard on xDrive 20i and xDrive 25d – smooths gear changes and further reduces fuel consumption. Fuel economy is highest in the sDrive 18d, which emits just 114g/km of CO2 and returns up to 68.9mpg. Meanwhile, ECO PRO mode works to maximise the efficiency of everything about the car, from your driving to the climate control, and can save up to 20 percent on fuel.
The new X1 signals the arrival of various new safety technologies that make it one of the most secure on the market. The uprated BMW ConnectedDrive system boasts a head-up display that projects vital journey and vehicle details directly onto the windscreen. Meanwhile, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistant and Active Cruise Control can be specified, among others.
