One of the stars of the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the all new MINI Clubman is a premium take on the classic compact car designed to create greater space for passengers and luggage, whilst retaining the marque’s trademark charm and magnificent driving dynamics. The new model’s greater length and width, as well as its increased wheelbase, gives it greater carrying capacity (up to 1,250 litres with the rear seats folded forward), whilst loading and unloading is easy thanks to the distinctive Split Doors at the rear. One clever feature is the LED roof fin, which flashes at regular intervals to ensure that you never lose your Clubman in a crowded car park.
Once drivers step into the Clubman’s highly customisable interior, they are faced by clear, simple dials and instruments, accompanied by ambient lighting to enhance the sense of occasion. Slim A-pillars (unusual in modern vehicles) ensure excellent visibility, whilst the low driving position and electric seat adjustment make the Clubman a hugely enjoyable car to drive. Optional extras include the “Chili Pack”, which adds features such as heated sports seat, automatic air conditioning, and LED headlights. A 6.5” or 8.8” touchscreen provides access to a wide variety of infotainment functions; the MINI Connected package is useful for drivers wishing to enjoy online radio stations or in-car apps.
Six airbags are standard with the new Clubman, meaning excellent all-round protection for occupants in the event of a collision. A variety of traction control systems enhance the manoeuvrability and poise for which MINI vehicles are famous. Optional extras include technology as advanced as the Parking Assistant, which makes parallel parking easier in the most pressured of situations, whilst not forgetting simple solutions such as the luggage compartment net, which stops items in the back being suddenly dislodged during an impact.
The two 136hp
and 192hp petrol engines available with the MINI Cooper Clubman and MINI Cooper
S Clubman both offer the eager response one would expect from a MINI. 0-62mph
acceleration times of 9.1 seconds in the smaller unit and 7.2 seconds in the
more powerful are impressive for a family car, whilst combined fuel consumption
of 55.4mpg and 45.6mpg respectively result in affordable running costs. The 2.0
litre, 150hp diesel, however, outmatches its counterparts for efficiency; it
achieves combined fuel economy of 68.9mpg and carbon emissions of just 109g/km,
meaning that this model is exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty during the first
year of ownership.
