The largest MINI yet, the new Countryman is a chic SUV that offers improved flexibility and features a rather luxurious interior.
The new Countryman is available in a range of trim levels, from Cooper to John Cooper Works. A plug-in hybrid grade can also be selected: the Cooper SE All4. Now longer and wider than the previously (200mm and 30mm respectively), the Countryman is also chunkier and more rugged than before. It features larger doors too, making access for front and rear-seat travellers much easier.
Generous amounts of chrome can be spied, as well as standard fixtures that include 16-inch wheels (wrapped in run-flat tyres), body-coloured door mirrors and LED lighting. Roof rails are featured with all models, and standard exterior lighting includes front fog lamps. Cooper S and SD grades boast 17-inch alloys.
The new Countryman’s cabin is more sumptuous than before, and overall build quality is of a very high standard. There’s more space for passengers in both compartments, and sliding and reclining seats enable the owner to calibrate the balance between cabin space and boot volume perfectly. The vehicle now provides a minimum boot capacity of 450 litres (100 litres bigger than previously), which can be expanded to 1,309 litres with rear seats folded.
Engines and performance
The majority of Countryman models are fitted with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, while some are installed with a 2.0-litre unit (petrol or diesel). Cooper SE All4 trims feature a three-cylinder petrol engine. Paired with an electric motor and battery pack, this returns as much as 135mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 49g/km.
Technology and safety
The new Countryman comes with a multifunction steering wheel, a 6.5-inch colour display screen, DAB tuner and MINI Boost radio. MINI Connected and MINI navigation are featured too. Among the vehicle’s range of safety features are Active Cruise Control, rear Park Distance Control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring and ISOFIX child-seat fixtures. The car is protected with a Thatcham 1 alarm system.
