For the first time in history, MINI has introduced a 5-door hatch to their model mix. Blending trademark MINI style and handling with easy access and extra legroom, the new MINI 5-door Hatch combines fun and function in the same electrifying package.
The new MINI Hatch 5-door has been designed for those that love the traditional MINI hatch but require more space and practicality.
It is not just extra doors that the new MINI has been given, it also has a bigger boot and more passenger space. The boot capacity is 278 litres, up 67 litres on the 3-door hatch, while passengers get 72mm more legroom, 15mm more headroom and 61mm more elbow space.
In terms of the exterior design, the 5-door gets the same hexagonal grille, headlamps and taillights as the 3-door, and will be available with the usual customisations options, like roof and wing mirror designs.
The basic model comes with 16 inch alloys, while the S and SD get 17 inch instead.
The technology available on the MINI Hatch 5-door is transferred directly from the 3-door model. Standard specifications include the new MINI LED display, bluetooth, USB input and air conditioning. While there is the opportunity to purchase optional extras like full LED lights, an 8.8 inch display, a Harmon Kardon audio system, MINIs head-up display, active cruise control and self dipping headlights.
The MINI Hatch 5-door has launched with two petrol and two diesel engines, transferred from the existing 3-door line up.
The petrol engines consist of an entry level 136bhp three-cylinder petrol and a 189bhp S. The diesel offering is a basic 116bhp and a quicker 170bhp SD.
In terms of gearboxes, there is the choice of a manual or two automatics, one of which offering a sport mode for faster acceleration and steering wheel controls (Only available on the S and SD versions).
MINI have said they expect the new 5-door to get a 5 star NCAP rating. It comes with six airbags and a protection system for pedestrians in the event of impact.
The MINI will also get the latest intelligence emergency calling system. This will instantly notify the emergency services in the event of an accident with the location and severity.
