Officially crowned European Car of the Year 2018 - The Volvo XC40!

Volvo Cars have done it again with their latest creation - the XC40 - as it drives away with the renowned COTY trophy by a clear margin

One of the most significant titles to be claimed has officially been awarded to the stunning Volvo XC40, making this one of the most decorated models on the market.

Car of the Year is the world's most reputable and longest-established awards ceremony within the automotive industry, dedicated to new cars produced internationally by top manufacturers. This year, it was time for Volvo to show what they're made of and put their latest model to the mark.

The All-New Volvo XC40 has stormed to victory since it's recent reveal and unsurprisingly, walked away with the coveted 'Car of the Year 2018' title. Voted for by a vast judging panel made up of 60 European journalists from 23 countries, who joined together to decide who would win the most influential car award in the world.

It was a clear triumph for the XC40, scoring an admirable 325 points in comparison to its rivals: the SEAT Ibiza (242 points), BMW 5 Series (226 points), Kia Stinger (204 points), Citroen C3 Aircross (171 points) Audi A8 (169 points) and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (163 points).

Pictured above is the moment that Volvo Cars Chairman, Hakan Samuelsso, accepted the award, saying: ‘We tried to win this award three years ago, we were almost there with the XC90. But I really believe the XC40 is the right car to win. Getting votes from all the countries shows the car is going to be a success.’

This is the first Volvo win for Car of the Year, after coming third in 2013 with the V40 and second place in 2016 with the XC90. In order for a car to be eligible for the award, it needs to be available in Europe and have projected sales of over 5,000 units. Beyond these specifics, it does not matter what type of car the contestant is - saloons, sports cars, hybrids and supermini's have all featured on the European Car of the Year 'Wall of Fame'.
